Unrest and demonstrations have rocked the nation's capital and many cities across the country — including Portland and other places in Oregon — in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. In today's episode, we bring you stories of the impact the protests have had in Canby and our in-depth interview with Police Chief Bret Smith, who shares his thoughts on the demonstration, the role of police and the tragic killing of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who died at the hands of four Minneapolis police officers one week ago.

Canby Conversation: Canby High School Principal Greg Dinse joins to talk about the challenges of celebrating a class of 400 at a time when gatherings larger than 10 have been banned. We were a little disappointed he didn't bring the bagpipes, but we'll get over it.
After the Break: "Advice, like youth, probably just wasted on the young," or so they say. Well, we're not about to let that stop us.

News and More: Playgrounds at Canby parks are open! Psych. A Canby-based construction firm was a lifeline to many locally owned restaurants during the Covid-19 shutdown. And, I guess, rocks have babies now? Everything in so different in the coronavirus days.
Canby Conversation: Olivia Harms jokes that she never had much choice in her career as a singer-songwriter. Her mother, country legend Joni Harms, presented her on stage at a concert when she was only two days old. Now, she's back from a recent trip to Nashville, where she finally recorded her latest album — a project she has been working on for the better part of three years.
After the Break: The telephone is an invention we've all been appreciating quite a bit more during the stay-home orders of the past couple months. On Canby Then, we begin our look at the history of the town's telephone service — one that dates all the way back to 1904.

News and More: The state has approved Columbia Distributing's application for the Strategic Investment Program, which will save the company an estimated $5.1 million in local property taxes over the next 15 years. More baaaaaad news for events this summer, and a couple of Canby sports heroes are honored just in time for their college graduations.
Canby Conversation: Canby has officially entered phase 1 of reopening from the Covid-19 shutdowns, and Canby Area Chamber of Commerce Director Kyle Lang joins us to predict what that might look like. Spoiler alert: It's going to look a little different for pretty much everybody. Face masks may not be required, but patience will be.
After the Break: The Canby Now Podcast takes a moment to honor and remember our nation's heroes. Thank you for your service and sacrifice. Happy Memorial Day.

News and More: Canby School District voters have passed a 20-year, $75 million bond measure to repair and improve schools, increase security and upgrade technology. Clackamas County has applied for Phase 1 reopening. An employee at the Safeway grocery store in Molalla has tested positive for Covid-19.
Canby Conversation: Canby has seen 29 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus, according to the Oregon Health Authority. One of them was Katerina Wert, who shares her experience today. Covid-19 was like a bad case of the flu, she said, which also gave her pneumonia: Definitely something to take seriously, but not something to be afraid of.
After the Break: Today, Canby's modern pump system generates more than 8 million gallons of water per day — and more than 20 million complaints (during the summer months anyway). But, how did it come to be? A look back at the town's waterworks — and the "Father of Irrigation" we have to thank for it, on Canby Then.

News and More: Frustration is building (heh) about new guidelines requiring face coverings at retail stores, including at Bricks & Minifigs Canby, which tried to buck the trend this weekend. Clackamas County completes its draft reopening plan, while still falling short of the states guidelines for contact tracing, isolation preparedness and PPE.
Canby Conversation: Bob Oblack and a group of like-minded Molalla residents are giving new meaning to the phrase "playing in the park." Their Pianos in the Park program pairs unwanted pianos with creative artists to create unique musical additions to public spaces — and it may be coming soon to a park near you.
After the Break: Canby Mayor Brian Hodson reflects on the state of the human condition and the divisions in our midst, which he declines to blame on the media (thank you) or even the government.

News and More: A Canby law firm is one of two to sue the governor this week on claims that her executive orders violate business owners' constitutional rights. Also, everything fun was canceled this week: Canby's Independence Day Celebration, the Cutsforth's Cruise-In, the Big Night Out and (sob) the Clackamas County Fair. On the bright side, our old library might be turned into a bar and arcade.
Canby Conversation: On Feb. 26, the Canby School Board voted to place a 20-year, $75 million bond issue on the ballot for the May primary. Two days later, Oregon’s first case of the novel coronavirus was confirmed, and the state has never been the same. On the Canby Conversation today, an edited version of a local media availability with board member Sara Magenheimer, discussing what has changed with regard to the bond, and why it still matters.
After the Break: Speaking of stuff that matters, that electricity is pretty great, eh? On Canby Then, we look at the history of electricity in Canby, including the time almost the entire city went back to using oil lamps, to protest prices so high that the local newspaper — unironically — compared them to the American revolution.

News and More: Well, it's official. 2020 is the absolute worst. Governor Kate Brown will not lift her restrictions on large gatherings until at least October. The summer fair season is over before it even began. In other news, counties across the state may begin reopening their economies as early as May 15, but Clackamas County will not be among them.
Canby Conversation: Breaking news: this summer is going to be a bummer. Joining us on the Canby Conversation today is Jason Fellman, co-owner and co-organizer of Harefest, and a concert promoter and musician. He tells us how the coronavirus has devastated the complicated ecosystem that is the live entertainment industry, and how you can help.
After the Break: This summer will at least still include one of our favorite pastimes: complaining about the town's drinking water. Algae that blooms in the Molalla River each year are the source of frequent concerns. John Runyon and Jason Faucera, of the Molalla River Water Drinking Water Project, tell us why it happens and what can be done to fix it.

News and More: Pappy's Greasy Spoon in downtown Canby opened for in-person dining Friday and Saturday, in violation of Governor Kate Brown’s executive orders. Five Clackamas County mayors call on the governor to accelerate her plans to allow smaller, more rural cities to reopen for business — or allow them to draft and implement their own.
Canby Conversation: Isolation may be key to mitigating the spread of COVID-19, but it can also help create the ideal circumstances for domestic violence to thrive. Melissa Erlbaum, of Clackamas Women's Services, tells us how to spot the warning signs, the local resources that are available and what you can do to help.
After the Break: We check in with our friends in Molalla, who honored first responders and local essential workers this week with a special program called "Piano in the Park." And we learn about Edward Richard Sprigg Canby, the little-known Civil War general the entire town and most everything in it is named after.

News and More: A restaurant in Canby opened for dine-in service Friday and Saturday, in violation of the governor's executive orders. The number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus has reached double figures at Country Side Living: seven residents and three employees. And a significant number of the Canby Fire District's emergency calls last month were for patients with symptoms consistent with Covid-19.
Canby Conversation: Everything is, well, not exactly awesome at Bricks & Minifigs in Canby, the flagship location of the nation’s largest chain of specialty retailers that buys, sells, and trades new & used LEGO sets, minifigs and bulk pieces. But owner David Thornton and his staff have continued to soldier on with their trademark creativity and positive attitude. What else can they do? It's not just for them; it's for the kids. Website. Facebook. Instagram.
After the Break: We continue our series looking at how the coronavirus pandemic are impacting different segments of our community, with a check-in on the parents of Canby High School seniors. What would it be like to watch your kid run a marathon, only to be told you can't cheer for them at the end? These parents could tell you.
